If someone suffers from anxiety, does it really matter whether we call their condition an anxiety problem or an anxiety disorder? Can it really make a difference to how quickly someone could overcome their anxiety?

So what is the difference between anxiety problems and anxiety disorders is? If we look at the definitions and differences between the two, it appears quite a grey area from one expert to another but in general a disorder is a more serious condition. And of course that is our perception; in general we perceive that if someone has a disorder, there is actually something genetically wrong with them. Possibly even inside their head that makes them respond and act in a certain way. This therefore leads to some people believing it is almost impossible to overcome the disorder and that the only way to deal with it is by taking drugs.

We all suffer with anxiety at times, and that is not surprising when you look at the way we live our lives these days. Everything is so important in this modern world, we must get things right. From a very young age we learned just how important it is to get things right and live our lives in the right and proper way. From when we first start school the pressure starts. We learned that life is all about what we can achieve. We must be at least as good if not better than everybody else. As we go through school we are taught that unless we can achieve a high standard in our classes, look the same as our peers, and do the same things then we are less worthy.

This goes on to passing our exams and getting a high grade, to going to university and getting a degree. And then it becomes so important that we get a good job and have nice clothes, and a nice car, and a nice house. And the reason these things are so important is that unless we obtain them and achieve highly we will not be happy and will be unworthy. And is this true? The fact is that achieving all these things does not necessarily mean we will be happy. And simply the pressures on us can cause the stress which can make us anxious causing the anxiety problem.

We then live our life in generally a higher state of anxiety than we like until one day we find ourselves in a very uncomfortable situation and anxiety takes over. We may even feel sick, our hands might feel sweaty, and we might have trouble breathing and feel very uncomfortable. This can be the start of an anxiety problem; the thought of being in that sort of situation again, can make us feel anxious on its own. These anxiety problems have been caused by our environment and therefore if we change the environment or even how we perceive the environment than we can feel better and therefore may be able to reduced or even cure the problem.

The people that come to see me with anxiety problems normally start suffering from feeling anxious in a certain situation. They then very often go on to feelings anxious about feeling anxious, they might even start looking for other situations where they might feel anxious. This can grow to a stage where they feel anxious about everything all the time. This makes them feel abnormal and different from other people. If we then call the condition and anxiety disorder then they may well perceive that this is such a deep mental problem that it will probably be impossible for them to overcome it. However, should we call the condition an anxiety problem, then a problem can be overcome.

Today we have access to an enormous amount of information, here on the net we can find out everything about anything. And it is so easy for people to find the wrong information if they go away considering they have an anxiety disorder that is almost impossible for them to overcome, they may very well feel anxious about the fact they cannot do anything about the condition adding to their anxiety.

I have lots of people that come to see me with anxiety problems and the main thing that I can do, is to allow them to be able to feel positive that they can overcome their problem. I believe that if someone believes they have anxiety problem it is more likely that they will overcome that problem.

Causes Of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety in people is considered to be a normal emotion, but at times being over anxious can turn our lives into a living nightmare. This can occur when normal anxiety becomes an extreme disorder. There are a number of things that can trigger such a reaction, though the causes of anxiety are yet not fully understood or defined.

Many prominent psychiatrists and therapists have different theories regarding the causes of this disorder. Many state that genetics may be the key to understanding such disorders. Others state it arises from circumstances people experience, thus making it a learned behavior. Many more have no real idea as to why extreme anxiety is caused in the first place.

We may identify some of the common causes of anxiety as being brought about by some mental condition, or perhaps a physical condition. The misuse of drugs, also the effects of certain types of prescribed medications can sometimes become one of the causes. Also there is the possibility that a combination of the above causes can lead to an anxiety disorder.

Causes of anxiety illnesses are due to certain mental conditions which may also include other types of anxiety disorders such as panic disorders. There are also the physical conditions that can give rise to anxiety. Conditions such as Palpitations, dizziness and shortness of breath can all be considered to be causes.

Other reasons may include coffee and caffeine based beverages, amphetamines such as speed, an overactive thyroid muscle, abnormal heart rhythms and many types of heart problems. An example of such heart problems is mitral valve prolapse.

While these may be some of the causes of anxiety there are many others which play their part in causing anxiety disorders. Many other types of anxiety disorders may themselves contribute towards the disorder. This can be Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD, Phobic disorders and, or Stress Disorder.

General stress caused from a number of different situations can also cause anxiety. Instances like stress experienced at work, stress involving a school problem, stress resulting from personal relationships like marriage and stress due to trauma, such as the death of a loved one. Stress due to a serious illness and financial stress may also be contributory causes of anxiety.

Apart from these causes you may experience anxiety because of the type of medication that you may be taking. These medications can be prescription drugs prescribed by your doctor, to treat other illnesses or in some cases they may even be illegal drugs like cocaine. Another thing to consider is that the side effects from certain drugs can also be part of the causes of anxiety.

We may never really know the reasons why extreme anxiety develops, because the exact causes of anxiety are still a mystery. Hopefully one day we will understand the causes of anxiety disorder and be able to treat it long before it becomes a serious problem.

Some might think they are going mad or they are having a heart attack. The symptoms of a panic attack are similar to the symptoms of a heart attack. The difference is, that while heart attacks may be very dangerous indeed, panic attacks are not. They are totally harmless, though they are very unpleasant. There are other differences, too.

If you think that you, or someone you know, is suffering from anxiety attacks or anxiety disorder, then you want to know something about anxiety attack treatment. It is not an imaginary disease, nor does it mean you are ‘crazy’ and need to be locked up.

The first thing you should do is talk to your family doctor and he or she will decide whether you have a medical problem that is causing these symptoms or whether it is anxiety attacks. What happens next depends on the severity of the attacks, but generally you would be referred to a specialist – a therapist or counselor.

If the condition is severe, you could be prescribed antidepressants. This is because depression is often thought to be the underlying cause of the anxiety attacks. There are several types of therapy that are used in treating anxiety. They all try to find the root of the problem and then address it. They range from simple coping techniques to complete reprogramming.

When the anxiety attacks are relatively mild, treatment consists mostly of learning how to keep calm. There are techniques such as learning how to control your breathing, how to replace negative thoughts with positive ones, and meditating, for example, which you can use when you feel that an attack is starting. They will help to stop the attack or at least lessen its effects if you cannot stop it. A therapist or counselor will help you to learn these.

There are changes you can make to your lifestyle, too – for example, avoid food and drinks that contain a lot of caffeine, sugar and other stimulants. You should also cut down on alcohol and drugs, or cut them out completely. They don’t help you to avoid the attacks at all – in fact, they make things worse. Exercise is also recommended. This is because you breathe more deeply during exercise and the increased oxygen helps you to feel more positive and upbeat, while also helping you to stay calm. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean pumping iron for hours on end. A stroll in the park for about half an hour a day is enough to produce feelings of calmness and well-being that last long after the exercise session has ended.
